Just after wrapping ‘Crimes’ and ‘Breakup’, I did this photoshoot. The original version of this shot was supposed to be the model standing by herself lighting the cigarette. For the life of her, though, she couldn’t get the lighter to work. I went over to light the cigarette for her, and decided to take a picture with the self timer, just something fun and indulgent for my self. Later that week, I had some work prints made up from various recent shoots, to show my teacher. I had this pic printed up, but forgot it was in the stack, until my teacher came across it. He was wasn’t really impressed by anything else from the ‘crimes’ and ‘breakup’ series, but loved this shot for some reason. I told him it was just a pic of me as a joke, and he said he didn’t care, it was still a great picture. He also commented how this should have been the direction I went with the ‘breakup’ series, more subtle and edgy. It really made me reevaluate my style, though I’m not sure the effects on how I shot were immediate. I think it took a little while for my style to catch up to that photo. On a side note, that photo was lit with only car headlights and the lighter.

‘BREAKING UP IN STYLE’
The idea behind this was to show people breaking up in a series of fashion shots. When I showed it to my teacher, he felt the photos came of a bit “kitschy”. Looking at it now, I think he was right.

After Steve told me my last self portrait of multiple me(s) seemed lazy, I started thinking of a way I could go over the top with the next one. Around the beginning of ‘06, it was finally settled that there would be no reshoots for ’ Diary of a Vampire’, in other words, I could finally cut my hair. Hooray! So I started thinking of a concept where we could cut my hair through out the shoot to further play up the fact that I was playing different characters. In the end, the idea became that of a photoshoot for a band. I would play the 4 band members, the photographer, the hair and make people, the manager, the agent, and a groupie. Later while setting up the shot on the day of the shoot, we added in a documentary videographer. I had one of the hair stylists I had been working with, Star, come over to do the hair and make up. Due to her schedule, we couldn’t start until 8pm. The shoot ended up taking 10 hours. We set up 3 different camera on tripods. We also had to figure out generally where each character would be, and how to light them, before we started shooting. I also decided it to shoot it in a ‘snap shoot’ type style. If something looks stylized and glossy, photoshop is to be expected. On the other hand, if it looks like someone shot it on their point and shoot camera, people tend to do a double take when you explain that everyone is played by the same person. Looking back now, this may be the most self indulgent thing I’ve ever done, but at least I have something to show for it.

On of my hair stylists that was working with at the time, Star, was entering a hair competition, and asked me if I would do the photography for her submission. On the day of the shoot, I had a 24 hr virus and felt like complete shiit, but some how still managed to get through the shoot.

This series is from the the second ‘fashion’ shoot. It’s inspired by the fashion editorials that ran in Playboy in the ’70s (when it was still cool)

In the beginning of ‘06, I decided I wanted to focus on fashion photography. Like many times in my life, I just sort of jumped in without much thought. I did my first two ‘fashion’ shoots over two consecutive weekends in January. These photos are from the first day shoots. In the end I spent $300 that day. I quickly realized I couldn’t afford to do that on every shoot. Over the next few years, my average shoot cost $0.
