MY FIRST SEMESTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY
I wasn’t sure how to start out this blog, so I thought I’d just share some of my work from the last few years. These first 2 photos are from my very first semester of photography in 2002. Our first semester we used Canon 35mm film cameras that were 100% manual, and shot only in black and white. These shots were done by shooting the model, making a print of that photo in the darkroom, cutting her out, and placing her in front of the background. The background of the clouds is a photo blown up, the painted background is a painting I did that’s about 18 inches wide. The action figures were then placed next to the cut out of the model and lit. Finally, I took another photo of everything together, and printed that. This was before we were taught about digital photography and Photoshop. Needless to say, they’re a little rough, but I still love ‘em anyway. The style and tone of the photos are inspired by German Expressionism (the one on the painted background is a direct nod to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
