After Steve told me my last self portrait of multiple me(s) seemed lazy, I started thinking of a way I could go over the top with the next one. Around the beginning of ‘06, it was finally settled that there would be no reshoots for ’ Diary of a Vampire’, in other words, I could finally cut my hair. Hooray! So I started thinking of a concept where we could cut my hair through out the shoot to further play up the fact that I was playing different characters. In the end, the idea became that of a photoshoot for a band. I would play the 4 band members, the photographer, the hair and make people, the manager, the agent, and a groupie. Later while setting up the shot on the day of the shoot, we added in a documentary videographer. I had one of the hair stylists I had been working with, Star, come over to do the hair and make up. Due to her schedule, we couldn’t start until 8pm. The shoot ended up taking 10 hours. We set up 3 different camera on tripods. We also had to figure out generally where each character would be, and how to light them, before we started shooting. I also decided it to shoot it in a ‘snap shoot’ type style. If something looks stylized and glossy, photoshop is to be expected. On the other hand, if it looks like someone shot it on their point and shoot camera, people tend to do a double take when you explain that everyone is played by the same person. Looking back now, this may be the most self indulgent thing I’ve ever done, but at least I have something to show for it.
